Progressive local churches and the Parks and Recreation Board oversee multifaceted recreational programs featuring volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, flag football, swimming and baseball. Harlan has over 70 acres of Harlan Parks. We have
Potter Park, North
Park, Swimming Pool Park, Leinen Park, Beebe Park, and the Dr. Joseph Spearing Park.
Pioneer Park, the largest in Harlan, has a pond, walking/jogging trail and the
handicap accessible Dream Playground. Frisbee Golf is
also available in Pioneer Park.
JJ Jenson Park has six baseball/softball diamonds available. There are opportunities for fishing, and ice skating. Shelby County has two 9-hole golf courses (1 public just outside the city limits and 1 private in Harlan), eight tennis courts and the Cyclone Lanes bowling alley.
The Petersen Family Wellness Center offers a variety of aerobic exercise opportunities.
There are over 1,700 acres of additional park land in the county, including two nature wildlife areas, over 400 acres of public hunting and the 661-acre Prairie Rose Lake State Park.

The Norman Stamp Aquatic Center typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes Labor Day weekend. Family and Single season passes may be purchsed as well as Punch Cards. The Aquatic Center is connected to the Swimming Pool Park and the Rocky Swenson Skate Park.
