Installation of Free Smoke Detectors, for county residents. Sponsored by The American Red Cross. Go to https://getasmokealarm.org/ and follow the online form. You can also text request to receive a free smoke alarm and installation by sending the word Alarm to 884-811-0100 and provide the necessary personal information via the prompts. A representative will contact the person within seven days of the submission with information on installation availability in that area. It will take 3-7 weeks for the actual installation.

First Day of the Annual Used Book Sale at the Harlan Community Library, 718 Court. Sponsored by the Harlan Literary Club, 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Runs through Saturday, April 29. For more information, check out our events calendar.

Art on the Fly and Jolene Peters will be hosting a painting night in conjunction with the HCHS Student Council - 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the High School Cafeteria, 2102 Durant Street, Harlan.  Registration is $40 for the event, with part of the proceeds going to Light the Night and Iowa LLS. Saturday, April 29

Book Signing/Discussion by local author, Mark Matthiessen. He will be presenting on the first two books in his Shelby Creek Series. Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. The public is welcome.

Season Opener – Shelby County Speedway. Shelby County Fairgrounds, 314 4th Street, Harlan. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., Hot Laps at 6:00 p.m., Racing at 6:30 p.m. Grandstand: Adults: $10, Students 11-18: $6, Kids 10 and under FREE with paid adult admission.

NOTE: Location Change: Light the Night, hosted by the Harlan Community High School Student Council. Due to inclement weather, this event will be held at the Harlan Community High School. For the schedule of events, please check out our events calendar.

Monday, May 1 – May Day!

Shelby County State Bank’s “Banking on a Cure” annual Purse-uing a Cure Silent Auction. Bidding begins on May 1 at 8:00 a.m. and ends May 5 at 3:00 p.m. All proceeds to benefit Relay for Life.

Tuesday, May 2

Iowa Community Kitchen night, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1325 Chatburn Avenue, Harlan. Everyone is welcome. Meal: tater tot casserole, salad, bread and dessert.

Book Worms Youth Volunteer Group, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. Volunteers help in the Children’s Area of the library doing age-appropriate tasks. A snack is provided.

Wednesday, May 3

Breakfast with the Birds - Prairie Rose State Park, 680 Road M47, Harlan. Please meet at the park office, 7:30 a.m. After we eat we will head out on a short hike to various parts of the park to look for birds. For more information, contact Christina Roelofs at 712-773-2701.

Discussion on butterfly gardens presented by Christina Roelofs, Naturalist with the Shelby County Conservation Board and Iowa DNR.
