Fire Prevention Week - Sunday, October 8 through Saturday, October 14.

The Harlan Fire Department Association is sponsoring two events to celebrate Fire Prevention Week:

Saturday, October 7 - "Stop, Drop, and Run" 5K Walk/Run, 9 am, Shelby County Fairgrounds, Harlan.

Sunday, October 8 - Breakfast & Open House, 7 am - noon, 906 Cyclone Avenue. Serving: biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, milk, orange juice and coffee. Free will donations accepted. Kids activities include: bounce house and kiddie train ride. Delivery available in Harlan from 7 - 11:30 am. Call the fire station Sunday morning at 712-755-5354.

Goal of Raising $50K. The Shelby County Community Chest has kicked off its annual fund drive with hopes of raising $50,000 this year for local organizations. The Shelby County Community Chest raises funds for non-profit agencies which provide valuable services to youth, for area residents, and to communities in the Shelby County Area. Donations can be made a variety of ways including mail to PO Box 527, Harlan, IA 51537, online<>, via automatic withdrawal, or they can be dropped off at any Shelby County State Bank. 2017 Harlan Harvest Fest Saturday, October 28, Downtown Harlan. Street Market on the Courthouse Square, Spook Daze Craft Fair at the Therkildsen Center. Other activities include a parade, face painting, cookie decorating, $1 movie at the Harlan Theatre, kid's games, trick-or-treating, and much more.

2017 (Shelby) County Wide Residential Fall/Halloween/Harvest Fest Outside Decorating Contest. This year's theme: Under the Sea. To enter, submit your photo to KNOD FM by delivering, or emailing<>. 4th Biannual Shelby County Craft Bazaar, 9 am - 2 pm, Cardinal Lofts Gymnasium, 304 Western Avenue, Shelby. Over 50 vendors/crafters.

Bikapalooza 2017 Scavenger Hunt/Adventure Ride, 10 am. Ride along Hwy 191 from Persia to Panama, 11 short miles, at least two-person teams will be picking up items and completing obstacles along the way to raise money for the Shelby County Trail System. Ride will start at "Plan B" bar in Persia. Additional instruction and clues will be given out the day of the ride. Cost is $25 per person and includes a t-shirt. Southwest Iowa MobilePack is sponsoring a "Food is Hope" event at Veterans Memorial Building 1104 Morningview Drive, Harlan. 500 volunteers are needed to pack more than 100,000 FMSC MannaPack Rice Meals. Find out more at<>.

Trick or Treating at Nishna Bend Recreation Area, 4 - 6 pm, 516 Maple Road, Harlan.  All eighteen campsites, both cabins, and a few other special guests will be handing out goodies to trick or treaters. All proceeds will go back into environmental education programs.  The rain date for the event is Sunday, October 15 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Thursday, October 19, Museum of Danish America Brown Bag Lunch Program, Elk Horn, 12 pm, Bro Dining Room. "You Can't Take It With You." Paul Johnson is a CFP® professional under contract with the museum to assist its donors with planned giving. Saturday, November 11, "Stomp Out Suicide" 5 K Fun Run, 10 am, Old Stone Arch Nature Trail Shelby. Pre-registration fee: $20 for adults, $50 for family. Day of run: $25 for adults, $55 for family.
