Did You Know?

Open position at the Elk Horn Public Library – Part-time Librarian. The City of Elk Horn is looking for a PT Librarian. This afternoon position averages 16 hours per week and plans/leads the Monday after school children's programming. Applications can be picked up at City Clerk’s office, 2027 Washington Street, Elk Horn between the hours of 8 am – 4:30 pm, most days, and due by August 21st. The City of Elk Horn is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27. The Hybrid Corn Pioneers Museum 5th Bi-Annual Historical Expo. 9 am – 5 pm. 2040 Ironwood Road, Earling.  Corn Plot tour, working corn machinery exhibits, rides and corn shelling for kids, 4-H food concessions and Beekman’s Homemade Ice Cream.

Blood donations are urgently needed in the final weeks of summer. Here are upcoming area blood donation opportunities. Walk-ins welcome and needed.

Shelby County Area Events

Saturday, August 19
Tour De Shelby County Motorcycle & Vehicle Scavenger Hunt. Registration begins at 9 am, kick stands up at 10:30 am. The “tour” starts and ends at the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan. $20 per bike; $25 for 2-up and vehicles.

Pollinator Program at Prairie Rose State Park, 680 Road M47, Harlan. 2 pm is the Monarch Caterpillar Mosey. Meet at the first parking area along the beach road. Participants will hike on a trail with tons of milk-weed searching for Monarch caterpillars. Then at 7 pm meet at the shower house/playground area for a program all about insects.

Shelby County Speedway, Shelby County Fairgrounds, 314 4th Street, Harlan. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., Hot Laps at 6:00 p.m., Racing at 6:30 p.m. For the most updated schedule, please check out their website.

Movie in the Park – “A Dog's Purpose” hosted by the Elk Horn Public Library, Elk Horn. Come celebrate the end of summer with a free movie in the park at dusk. Don't forget your blanket and lawn chair. Concessions available for purchase.

Sunday, August 20
End of Summer and Back to School Karaoke Bash at Summer Magic Tropical Sno in Harlan (rescheduled from August 15).  Every participant who signs up prior to 6pm and performs receives free Sno card. Don't be shy - share your talent with fellow SNO lovers and celebrate the start of school!

Monday, August 21 – The National Solar Eclipse Solar Eclipse Program, 12:30 – 1:30 pm, hosted by the Elk Horn Public Library, 2027 Washington Street, Elk Horn. Brandon Baggett will present a free program open to adults and children about the first total eclipse visible in the US in 38 years.

Tuesday, August 22

Dog Days of Summer Customer Appreciation, 11 am – 2 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. Join the library staff for their end of summer picnic. Serving hot dogs, chips, drinks, and desserts.

Iowa Community Kitchen serves their meal 4 pm to 6:30 pm at First Baptist Church, Harlan. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday, August 23

Children's Story Time, 10:30 am – 11:15 am, Harlan Community Library, Children’s Area, 718 Court Street, Harlan. Story Time Topic: Friendship-Welcome back friends!

Thursday, August 24

Hike Night at Prairie Rose, 680 Road M47, Harlan, 7 pm. Meet at campground sites 80-95.

Save the Date

Monday, August 28: Mobile Food Pantry, 5:00 – 6:30 pm (Note time change – 5:00 start instead of 4:30), Veterans Memorial Building, 1104 Morningview Drive, Harlan. This mobile pantry is available free of charge. Please bring boxes or bags to carry food.

Thursday, August 31: Town Meeting with U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, 2:45 – 3:45 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Wednesday, September 6: Concerned, Inc.’s 17th Annual Appreciation Picnic, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, Concerned, Inc. Business Office, 1812 Industrial Parkway, Harlan. There will be food, fun, and prizes. 

Saturday, September 9: 35th Annual Carstens Farm Days, September 9th and 10th.  Family friendly exhibits and entertainment both days.  Entertainers & Musicians welcome both days. Staley’s Chicken Dinner at 5:30 pm on Saturday and Thresher’s Breakfast at 6:30 am both days. $5 entry fee, children age 8 and under are free.

Tuesday, September 12: IowaWorks Loess Hills staff will be at the Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, 1 – 3 pm. Services available: resume writing, application tips, and registering profiles on their website.
