Harlan, the Christmas City, is also seeking funds to assist with the addition of more lights for Pioneer Park, downtown Harlan, and other sites around town. West Central Community Action Senior Community Services Employment Program (SCSEP). Senior Workers Wanted. Paid training for positions in Western Iowa. Must be 55 or older, meet Federal Poverty guidelines, currently unemployed, and looking for a full or part-time job where you can gain valuable experience while getting paid. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) – Free tax preparation services for low and moderate income families (adjusted gross income must be below $57K). Available by appointment only. Call to schedule an appointment, Monday, January 8, by calling Shelby County ISU Extension & Outreach, Harlan, 712-755-3104, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. No appointments will be scheduled before Monday, January 8.

After School Game Night, 3:30 – 4:30 pm, Elk Horn Public Library, 2027 Washington Street, Elk Horn. We’ll be playing Pictionary. Come have fun and win prizes.

Tuesday, January 9

Library and Lunch Book Discussion, 12 – 1 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. This month's book is The Chamber by John Grisham. This program is open to the public. See library staff to get the book.

Hands on Job Support Services, 1 – 3 pm. Sponsored by Iowa Works, hosted by Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. An Iowa Works representative will be at the library to help the public with job seeking activities. No appointment is needed.

Book Worms Youth Volunteer Group, 4 – 5 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan.

Iowa Community Kitchen serves their meal 4 pm to 6:30 pm at First Baptist Church, Harlan. Tuesday’s meal is scalloped potatoes, vegetable, bread, dessert. First Baptist Church volunteering. Everyone in the community is welcome. Minimum of $3 donation. KNOD will announce if we are closed due to inclement weather.

Lego Challenge, 6:30 – 7:30 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. Come enjoy a different Lego challenge each month. Snacks will be provided. Everyone is welcome.

Ambassador Visit, 9:30 am, Shelby County ISU Extension and Outreach, 906 6th Street, Harlan.

Kick Start the Leader in You in Spanish, 9:30 – 4:30 pm, Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. Orlando Gil, president of TCTS Global, will be facilitating the workshop. Space is limited to the first 20 participants signed up. The cost for the program, including all the materials, lunch and snacks, is $125 per student. Deadline to sign up is today, Friday, January 5, by 4 pm.

Sunday, January 14
Dad’s Belgian Waffles Brunch & Silent Auction, 9 am – noon, St. Mary’s Parish Hall, 200 N 2nd Street, Panama. Hosted by The Shelby County Trails Board. Serving waffles, sausages, flavored syrups, and drinks. Adults $7 in advance, $8 at the door; children ages 6 – 12 $5 in advance, $6 at the door; children under 6 years of age free. All you care to eat. Carry-outs available. Plus Shelby County Trails Silent Auction. Auction item donations will be greatly appreciated. Monday, January 29, 6 – 8 pm, Hospice Fair - Salem Lutheran Homes & Rehabilitation Center, 2207 College Street, Elk Horn. Join the staff in finding out more about Hospice Care and the options offered. Hospice providers from Myrtue Medical Center, AseraCare and St. Croix will be available to answer questions about Hospice Care.

Thursday, February 1, 10 – 12 pm, Open House, ThinkSpace IT, 1108 8th Street, Harlan. Celebrating a new year, a new location, and new staff.
