Saturday, June 10! - Inaugural Honey Bacon Show-N-Shine Event, Shelby County Fairgrounds. This event is FREE to the public. Saturday, June 10, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Multiple Class Show-N-Shine, Craft and Junkers Fair, and Food Vendors. Make sure to stop by the Chamber booth to say “hi” to Debbie and Carol. June 12 – 18, 2017 is “Iowa Museum Week”. The Museum of Danish America, 2212 Washington Street, Elk Horn and its Genealogy Center, 4210 Main Street, Elk Horn, will offer free admission as a celebration of the week.

Attention Ladies! The deadline for the Iowa Women in the Outdoors Event has been extended to Saturday, June 10. This event takes place the evening of Friday, June 23, at Nishna Bend Recreation Area and during the day on Saturday, June 24, at Prairie Rose State Park. The Museum of Danish America Bedstemor’s House, 2105 College Street, Elk Horn, is now open 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. every day through Labor Day, September 4. There is no admission charge to see this historic treasure.

Hero’s Attic Home Accents Sale. 60% off all lamps, pictures, mirrors, and small shelves. Runs through the end of June. Located at 1105 8th Street, Harlan.

Congratulations to:

  • Shayla Leinen, nursing instructor at the Shelby Center of Iowa Western Community College for receiving the Daisy Faculty Award in the nursing department. The Daisy Award is presented to show appreciation to the nursing facility for the commitment and inspirational influence they provide to their students.
  • Myrtue Medical Center Hospice – Shelby County Community Health Department has been named a 2017 Hospice Honors recipient by Deyta Analytics. Hospice Honors is a prestigious program that recognizes hospices providing the highest level of quality as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Award recipients were identified by evaluation performance on a set of 24 quality indicator measures.

Shelby County State Fair

Open Class Exhibits for Shelby County residents and residents in surrounding counties (Audubon, Harrison, Crawford, Cass, and Pottawattamie). Entry day is Wednesday, July 12, 11:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Check out the Fair Book online for a complete listing of departments, rules, divisions and classes.

Upcoming Chamber Event

Friday, June 23 – Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry Golf Tournament, Harlan Golf & Country Club. $50 per person or $200 per team, cart rental is $30. Entry fee includes golf, flag/door prizes and dinner. Registration begins at 3:00 p.m.; Putting Contest at 3:30 p.m.; Tee Off at 3:45 p.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the Chamber office, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan, downloaded from our Events page or emailed to you.

Donna McClain's Retirement Farewell, 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Salem Lutheran Homes & Rehabilitation Center, 2207 College, Elk Horn. Come celebrate all the work she has done at Salem to make life enjoyable for all who have lived there and who have passed away.

5th Annual “A Night for Nicaragua” at My Nest Greenhouse – 1134 1600th Street, Harlan, 7:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Authentic Mexican Food, Beverage Sampling and Silent Auction.  Live Entertainment from Patti Bogler & Band. Hosted by Shelby County Nicaragua Partners. Free will offering accepted.

Moonlight Paddle at Prairie Rose State Park. 8:30 p.m. Meet at the east side of County Road M47. Ten canoes will be available for use or participants can bring their own canoe or kayak. If you bring your own, make sure you bring the required white light for the back of your boat at night.

Mr. Magic in the Jonathan May Show – 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, Harlan. He entertains his audience with magic, balloon animals and other family friendly antics. His show is engaging and entertaining for all ages.

Thursday, June 15

Book Worm Youth Group Volunteer Meeting, 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m., Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. This program is open to children 10 years and up.

E-Books for Everyone in Westphalia, IA, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., St. Boniface Parish Center, 305 Duren Street. Bring your mobile device and your library card. Receive one-on-one assistance. No reservation required. Sponsored by the City of Westphalia and the Harlan Community Library.

Roar into Harlan Bike Night, Historic Harlan Downtown Square, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Historical Presentation - The Monuments Men. 6:30 p.m., Elk Horn Public Library, 2027 Washington Street, Elk Horn. Please join the library staff in welcoming retired Winterset Public Library Director Nancy Trask in a historical presentation about the Monuments Men, with a special focus on Iowa's own Monuments Man, George Stout.

LEGO Challenge, 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. A night for children and their families to attend. A new challenge each time.

Harlan, Iowa’s 72nd Annual Flight Breakfast Weekend. June 17 and June 18, Rushenburg Field (HNR) Harlan Municipal Airport, Hwy 59 South, Harlan. Saturday evening, airplane rides – $15 and BBQ – $4, hotdogs, brats, chips and pop, 4:30 p.m. – dusk. Sunday, breakfast served 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Adults $6, 10 & under $3. Sponsored by the 8-Ball Aviation Club.
