May is National Bike Month and today, May 19, is National Bike to Work Day. 

Saturday, May 20 is Armed Forces Day. A special “Thanks” to our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

Monday, May 29 – Memorial Day. The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry office will be closed.

Harlan Grand Opening: Summer Magic Tropical Sno in Harlan opens for the season on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 27th, at Noon! We look forward to seeing you there!

Free Summer Kids’ Movies at the Harlan Theatre start Tuesday, June 6. Free movie tickets can be picked up here at the Chamber office and at other participating businesses (see the theatre’s Facebook page for that list). Pick up your tickets and redeem them at the theatre box office. Please note, tickets will not be issued at the theatre.

New Feature. The Shelby County Historical Society and Museum added a new feature to their website. You can now purchase and renew your museum membership via credit/debit card or PayPal completely online. No account is needed. Check it out now.

Volunteer Opportunities. The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry is looking for great people to volunteer for our Ambassador and Events Committees. Please join us on Wednesday, July 26, 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce Atrium, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan, for a presentation about our volunteer opportunities. Book Worms Youth Volunteer Group. Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street, 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Volunteers help in the Children’s Area of the library doing age-appropriate tasks. A snack is provided. It is a great way for youth to learn more about their library too!

Iowa Community Kitchen night, 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1325 Chatburn Avenue, Harlan. Everyone is welcome. Meal: Chicken strips, French fries, salad and dessert.

E-Books for Everyone goes to Panama, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Stop by St. Mary's Parish Hall in Panama and learn how to read FREE E-Books on your mobile device through the Harlan Community Library. No reservation is required. Just stop by with your device & let us help you get started!

Surprises in Family Histories/Brown Bag Lunch, Museum of Danish America, 2212 Washington Street, Elk Horn, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Come and hear the stories from families that Michele-Chris McNabb, M.A., M.L.I.S., has researched – stories usually only the families themselves get to hear! Held in the museum's Bro Dining Room. Please bring a lunch to enjoy during the presentation.

Hike Night at Prairie Rose State Park, 680 Road M47, Harlan, 7:00 p.m. Please meet at the beach parking lot.

Cook The Book - Harlan Community Library. Join the library staff for Cook the Book.
They choose the cook book, you choose the recipe. For this event - appetizers! Stop by the library and pick out the appetizer from the book, Martha Stewart's Appetizers that you want to make. Library staff will make copies of the recipe for you. Make enough to share with 12 other people. Bring your dish back on Thursday night, at 6:30 p.m. to share with other and sample other appetizers.

Sunday, June 4 – Log Cabin Day, Shelby County Historical Society and Museum, 1805 Morse Avenue, Harlan, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. This year the museum will have all kinds of attractions - blacksmithing, basket weaving, live music, a Benjamin Franklin impersonator, a working cannon, and much more! As usual, the museum buildings will be open, and they will be revealing their new Military Exhibit Hall as well. Come on down to Potter's Park in Harlan and celebrate a Shelby County tradition going back over twenty years.

Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 – FarmTable Procurement & Delivery Cash & Carry, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan (north side of the Iowa Western Community College Building and next door to the Chamber office). Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 - Inaugural Honey Bacon Show-N-Shine Event, Shelby County Fairgrounds. This event is FREE to the public. Friday, June 9, 4:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.: Honey and Bacon Cooking Competition (must use both ingredients), Craft and Junkers Fair, Live Music. Saturday, June 10, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.: Multiple Class Show-N-Shine, Cooking Competition Continues, Craft and Junkers Fair. Friday, June 23 – Shelby County Chamber of Commerce & Industry Golf Tournament, Harlan Golf & Country Club. $50 per person or $200 per team, cart rental is $30. Entry fee includes golf, flag/door prizes and dinner. Registration begins at 3:00 p.m.; Putting Contest at 3:30 p.m.; Tee Off at 3:45 p.m. Registration forms can be picked up at the Chamber office, 1901 Hawkeye Avenue, Harlan or emailed to you.
