Did You Know?

Grampa’s Pumpkin Farm, opening on Saturday, September 23 for our inaugural season. Come enjoy fall family fun from September 23 through October 29 on Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm and Sundays from Noon to 6 pm. Located between Panama and Woodbine at 116 Street F32. General Admission: $5, $1 additional charge for entrance into the Corn Maze. Children 2 and under are always free

“Kick Start the Leader in You – Leadership Series”, will expand on the original workshop held in March 2017 and offer a more in-depth examination of the topics that will help develop new supervisors while offering a refresher to other. The total series is comprised of seven sessions. The initial session is scheduled on Friday, October 13, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The additional six session are held in the afternoon, 1 – 4 pm, in the ICN room at the Harlan Community Library, 718 Court Street. Series dates: Friday, October 13 through Friday, December 1. There will not be a class on Friday, November 24. Space is limited to the first 15 participants signed up. Cost of the program, including all the materials is $500 per student. Call the Chamber office at 712-755-2114 with questions or to sign up. Deadline to sign up is Friday, October 6.

Relay for Life Breakfast Fundraiser, Saturday, October 28, 8 – 11 am, Goozman’s Westside Bar & Grill, Downtown Harlan. $6 for adults, $3 for kids 6 & under. In conjunction with the Harlan Harvest Fest. This event is hosted by the Relay for Life Team “We Don’t Whine, We Fight”.

2017 Harlan Harvest Fest Saturday, October 28, Downtown Harlan. Street Market on the Courthouse Square, Spook Daze Craft Fair at the Therkildsen Center. Other activities include a parade, face painting, cookie decorating, $1 movie at the Harlan Theatre, kid’s games, trick-or-treating, and much more.

Harlan Flower Barn now carries tailor fit men’s dress shirts. Located at 624 Market Street, Downtown Harlan.

Shelby County Area Events

Friday, September 22

Harlan High School Homecoming Parade, 2:30 pm, Downtown Harlan. This year's theme: "Homecoming and Beyond". The parade route: From the Therkildsen Center, east on Baldwin, north on 6th Street, west on Market Street, and south on 7th Street to the courthouse, where a pep rally will commence. Other parade entries not participating in the rally will continue on 7th Street to Durant Street and west on Durant Street to 8th Street.

Dinner and Cyclone Football, Merrill Field. Sponsored by the HC Athletic Booster Club. 9th grade game 4:45 pm, varsity game 7:30 pm. Serving steak sandwiches, hamburgers, bacon cheeseburgers, pizza by the slice, hot dogs, turkey tenders, Super Nachos, candy and pop.

Bean Bag Tournament. Prior to the HCHS Homecoming Game, 5:30 pm, grass area between Vets Auditorium and Molded Products. $10 per team, 100% payout. Call the Chamber office to register, 712-755-2114. 16 team limit.

Sunday, September 24

Defiance Fire & Rescue Pancake Breakfast, 8 am – noon, Defiance Fire Hall. Serving pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, coffee and juice. Carry out available. Free will donations accepted.

Tuesday, September 26

Myrtue Medical Center Flu Vaccination Clinic, 10 - 11:30 am, Shelby Community Club, 500 East Street, Shelby. No appointment is necessary. Please wear clothing that will allow a shot, such as a short-sleeved shirt.

Lonely Oak Distillery Grand Opening, 2 - 10 pm, 1833 Elmwood Road, Earling. Please join Pat and Amy as they celebrate their Grand Opening. They will have distillery tours, drink specials, entertainment, and Stone Arch Pizzeria will be making their famous Neapolitan style pizza. Stay tuned for more details.

Thursday, October 5. Monogram Prepared Meats, 1231 870 Street (south on Hwy 59), will be hosting a Business After Hours/Open House for Chamber members only from 5 – 7 pm at their Harlan facility. There will be products available for sampling, BLT’s, non-alcoholic beverages, tours available of their raw, pack off, and storage areas (no open shoes, no shorts), and Troy Schaben will give a 5 – 10 minute overview of their business. Friday, October 6. Everyone is invited to Farmers Trust and Savings Bank 125th Anniversary Celebration, 9 am at their Harlan location, 1901 Chatburn Avenue. The Chamber staff encourages all Ambassador Committee members and Chamber members to attend this event.

Wednesday, October 4, “Healthiest State Walk”, 12 – 12:30 pm, Pioneer Park Walking Trails. Meet at the Pine Street Shelter. Bring a friend, neighbor or co-worker. Dogs welcome. Prizes. Water and snack provided. Presented by Delta Dental.

Saturday, October 7, “Stop, Drop, and Run” 5K Walk/Run, 9 am, Shelby County Fairgrounds, Harlan. Sponsored by the Harlan Fire Department Association.

Saturday, November 11, “Stomp Out Suicide” Fun Run, 10 am, Old Stone Arch Nature Trail Shelby. Pre-registration fee: $20 for adults, $50 for family. Day of run: $25 for adults, $55 for family. Parking and onsite registration (begins at 9 am) will be at the Corn Crib, 12 East Street, Shelby. For more information, including pre-registration, call Shelby City Hall at 712-544-2404.
